Bite-sized motivation (or why we love inspirational quotes)

Motivational quotes – go onto Facebook and it’s a certainty that one will pop up on your timeline. Same on Instagram. And as for Pinterest – well, you could spend hours on there being inspired while actually not getting much done!

I (and most other Facebook page owners) know that a pretty and inspiring quote graphic will bring a smile to the faces of our followers and get the Like button clicking.

But why do we love them so much? And do they really help to motivate us?

Apparently there is a firm scientific explanation (all to do with neuroscience and pattern interruption) that explains things. It also tells us that a quick glance at an inspirational quote in the morning will only take us so far! Sadly, bite-size motivation only has a bite-size impact – so you still need to knuckle down and put in the hard yards.

But while you’ll probably get more motivation and useful tips by spending time reading a good book (like Anthony Robbins  “Awaken the Giant Within” for example) a quick hint can be super-effective for a quick boost. Especially if it’s visually attractive and memorable.

For me personally, they work by just giving me a gentle reminder. A short dose of positivity to nudge me into doing what I’m meant to be doing. Helping to keep me on track through some of the less interesting tasks. And because it only takes a second or two it doesn’t take time out of my day.

Posting the occasional quote onto your social media can really help your engagement. With all the tools available it’s quick and easy to take one of your images and add some inspiring text. Just remember to give credit and not to claim Einstein’s thoughts as your own!
